Telling the Human Story of a Shifting Landscape

In the ever-shifting landscape of the Fens of eastern England, this multimedia project records the stories of lives shaped by water and land, highlights risks and opportunities in a uniquely vulnerable ecosystem and invites dialogue on living with change.

Through voices of lived experience and the landscapes they inhabit, the project traces the story of the Fens across past, present and future.

The works will be created through a mix of contributions from lead artist Fraser McGruer, local communities, educational institutions and collaborations with fellow creatives.

This map projection from Climate Central, based on UN IPCC data, shows the Fens in 2100 — under the most optimistic global warming scenario of just 1°C. It starkly illustrates the challenges facing the Fens. Even this best-case future brings water back to the land.
